PIXIA to Develop Rapid Image Access System to Support Hurricane Response
STERLING, Virginia, 7 August 2006 – Pixia Corp., a provider of rapid image access technology, is developing a prototype system based on open standards to quickly disseminate satellite and aerial imagery to analysts and emergency responders in support of hurricane preparedness and response activities.
PIXIA has been tasked by the National Technology Alliance (NTA) under contract with Rosettex Technology & Ventures Group of Arlington, VA., to deliver the system in August of this year.
The image dissemination system will make high-resolution imagery of the U.S. East Coast and Gulf of Mexico instantly accessible via designated government web portals. The server will make imagery available via a Web Map Service (WMS) to both analysts requiring advanced GIS capabilities as well as those users seeking only to visualize pre- or post-event imagery of the affected area. Any WMS client that follows the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards will be able to seamlessly access this image server.
“During a time of crisis it is essential that technology aids the emergency responder and not hinder them. It is our firm belief that the ability to instantly access and analyze full resolution imagery covering the entire area of interest will greatly improve the responders’ efficiency and execution of their mission,” said Rudi Ernst, CEO and Co-founder of PIXIA.
PIXIA’s technology allows for ingesting imagery into the server at rates that exceed current commercial systems by an order of magnitude. Under this program, PIXIA will demonstrate the ability to continuously add new imagery to the server as it is being acquired without interruption to the service. This capability should significantly improve the lag time from image collection to dissemination.
“We are pleased to be supporting PIXIA in this important technology development effort to support hurricane response and relief efforts. This new capability is an essential tool for our Nation’s first responders. PIXIA is an exemplar of the next generation commercial technology providers in the Rosettex partner network that have rapidly deployed critical technology to the Government in support of the NTA,” said David Scott, Chief Operations Officer of Rosettex. “Flexible, rapid, and robust image access technology is a critical need for many of our NTA stakeholders.”
